As the last quarter of 2011 approaches, it cane mean only one thing: awards. Academy Awards. Golden Globes. SAG awards. BAFTA awards. Cesars. Independent Spirit awards. Which raises the question: are there just too many kudos and nods out there? Case in point: The Broadcast Film Critics Association has just announced its picks for the greatest Blu-ray discs of all time. Sounds pretty cool, right? Wrong.

According to TheWrap, the BFCA winners come with a few caveats. Blu-rays up for votes were not picked by the members of the BFCA (who also determine the Critics Choice Movie Awards), but were “nominated” by the seven companies that are members of the Blu-ray Disc Assn. Each company — Disney, Lionsgate, Sony, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Warner Bros. and Paramount — could send voters five titles they wanted to be considered for top dog. (Paramount only sent two.)

This, of course, shut out two companies that provide some of the best Blu-ray product in the marketplace: The Criterion Collection and Kino. Smaller companies that also turn out good Blu-ray product, such as Anchor Bay, also were not represented.

Another restriction imposed by the Association: Voters had to vote for one release from each of the past five years, not for their top five picks spread out over the years since Blu-ray was introduced. It all sounds pretty bogus.

That being said, what were the winners?

2006-2007: ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition
2008: ‘Planet of the Apes’ 40-Year Evolution set
2009: ‘The Wizard of Oz’ 70th Anniversary Three-disc Emerald Edition
2010: (tie) ‘Apocalypse Now’ Full Disclosure Special Edition and ‘Avatar’ Extended Collector’s Edition
2011: ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Motion Picture Trilogy Extended Edition

The only problem? 2011 isn’t even over yet! There’s still some hot titles coming out — most notably ‘Star Wars: The Complete Saga.’
