OK, there’s a mitigating factor here. Supposedly the studio has plans to use the original script from the 1939 classic. That in and of itself means nothing, however; look at what happened when Gus Van Sant used the original ‘Psycho’ script for a remake of that classic.
According to Deadline, Warners owns the screenplay because Ted Turner bought it — along with the MGM library — and then, of course, Warners bought Turner’s companies.
Meanwhile Disney is still working on its prequel of sorts to ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ called ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful,’ with Sam Raimi developing the project, which is about a circus man who magically gets transported to Oz and becomes the Wizard. The studio wants Robert Downey Jr. for the lead.
But a total remake of ‘The Wizard of Oz’?
Some stuff should be left alone. What do you think? (By the way, the readers of Deadline responded with a whopping 72 comments to the post, with the vast majority expressing negative opinions).
